This clunking might be completely different than the normal driveshaft "freeplay". If the movement is "excessive", that could mean the bushing is worn.

WebIs it normal to have play in your drive shaft? I have a 1997 GMC sonoma, and if you take your hand, and push/pull on the drive shaft sideways, it moves probably 16th of an inch. WebJan 19, 2014 · If your yoke slides in all the way to the seal without bottoming on anything then your ok. If it comes to a sudden stop and is still 1/2" from being near the seal then you should modify the shaft so you can have proper engagement and the correct driveshaft freeplay when your done.
