WebbToxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but life-threatening condition caused by a toxin released by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes (1,2). More commonly, we refer to these bacteria as staph and strep, respectively. WebbStaphylococcal TSS is likely to cause vomiting, diarrhea, myalgia, elevated creatine kinase, mucositis, hepatic damage, thrombocytopenia, and confusion. The staphylococcal TSS rash is more likely to desquamate, particularly on the palms and soles, between 3 and 7 days after onset.
